I mostly really liked this place – the views are gorgeous, down the valley and up to the cathedral, there’s great light, and the size of the rooms and the height of the ceilings make it feel even bigger than it already is. It only has one common wall with the flat next door, so we didn’t get any noise from neighbours within the building. The building itself is called Palazzo Ansidei di Montemarte and parts of it date from the 16th century. It must have been quite something in it’s day but it’s a little dilapidated now, and half covered in rampant wisteria which would be gorgeous in spring when it flowers. The location is a minute’s walk to the cathedral and historic centre, and there are lots of eateries and shops nearby. It’s about a 5-10 minute walk to the minimetro. Initial contacts were replied to in reasonable time and we were able to check in early at 13:00 which was very welcome. The flat has obviously been refurbished since the 1600s, and all the bathrooms and kitchen seem to be from the 50s or so. It’s furnished like someone’s rather rich nonna used to live there. There are two bedrooms both with big beds and ensuite bathrooms. The one we choose to use had a newish standalone shower and a full bath. The bed is comfortable with a thick mattress topper and there are enough electrical outlets for phone chargers etc. Shower has good pressure and the hot water worked well. Kitchen has a gas cooker and full fridge and microwave, as well as room for a table and chairs. It has a dishwasher but we didn’t use it so don’t know if it works. There was a basic travel iron and board. There was a third half bathroom with a loo and bidet – it had a washing machine in it but we didn’t use it either so don’t know if it works. Luckily a rather aggressive taxi driver made us choose to use the minimetro to get back to the station and Saturday market – it was quite fun, easy, only EU1.50 per ticket, ticket machines are easy to use, and you can tap payments.
