Super breakfasts, including fresh eggs the owner Dionisin collects from his farm (free-range is an understatement): my first goose-egg omelette! Delicious! and homemade fig jam, another first, also delicious. And excellent coffee. The hotel is quite new and everything was shiny and bright and spotless. Fantastic shower and good firm mattress. All the staff (all locals) were friendly and kind, and owner Dionisin in particular. On my first day I got lost on the city bus, and the bus monitor (are these an Albanian specialty? they are certainly helpful) along with a couple of riders called the hotel; Dionisin drove over right away and picked me up and all of us laughed about it. He also arranged a wonderful driver for when buses weren't available. I will be back next year for sure. Hotel Merkaj and its people are an outstanding asset to the community of Berat.

Small newish hotel in a back street that didn’t look it would have a hotel but was perfectly safe and quiet. The owner was there ready to greet us and arrange parking. He was so friendly and welcoming as were all the staff. Breakfast was served on a pleasant veranda and was more than adequate and tasty- delicious eggs and home made strawberry jam.
